Organic Waste Composter Installed, Still Sending it out..

Updated: Sep 2, 2023

SWM Rules 2016 is a comprehensive guideline that directs all the BWG's (bulk waste generators) to compost all their organic waste within their premises. As per the rules it is almost forbidden that BBMP collects any waste from a BWG.

It's great to see that many apartments in Bengaluru are taking the initiative to segregate their waste into wet and dry categories.

Waste segregation is a crucial step in effective waste management and environmental conservation. However, it's disheartening to learn that despite this effort, some apartments are still sending out both types of waste through BBMP (Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike).

Waste segregation is the process of separating different types of waste at the source itself, which includes homes, apartments, and other establishments. The goal of waste segregation is to make the recycling and treatment process more efficient, thereby reducing the burden on landfills and promoting a cleaner environment.

When apartments segregate wet waste (organic waste like kitchen scraps) and dry waste (non-biodegradable waste like plastic and paper), it's an important step towards proper waste management. However, for this effort to be truly effective, it's crucial that the segregated waste gets recycled. When all waste gets recycled we tend towards a "Zero Garbage" situation.

The SWM Rules 2016 is a comprehensive guideline that directs all the BWG's (bulk waste generators) to compost all their organic waste within their premises. As per the rules it is almost forbidden that BBMP collects any waste from a BWG.

Sending segregated waste out defeats the purpose of SWM Rules 2016 and can attract penalties. The BBMP has guidelines to police and enforce the SWM Rules 2016, if segregated waste is not handled correctly by any BWG. The whole idea of decentralizing the waste management is to ensure that no waste is being sent to landfills. The existing landfills be bio-mined and restored to their original state.

When the Facility Managers at the apartments conveniently say that they are sending out their waste, "BBMP vehicle is coming and picking it up", it not only wastes the efforts of those who diligently segregate their waste but also undermines the city's waste management goals.

To address this issue, it's essential to create awareness among apartment residents about the importance of proper waste disposal. This could include educational workshops, informational pamphlets, and engaging discussions about the impact of waste mismanagement on the environment and the community.

Additionally, urging the local authorities and waste management agencies to implement stricter monitoring and penalties for incorrect waste disposal can play a significant role. When residents see the direct consequences of their actions, they are more likely to follow proper waste disposal practices.

As someone who is passionate about environment clean-up and conservation, you can take a lead in this endeavor. Consider collaborating with local community groups, environmental organizations, and even BBMP representatives to organize awareness campaigns and drive home the message of waste segregation and responsible disposal. Your expertise in content creation, blogging, and gardening could be powerful tools in spreading the word and encouraging positive change.

Remember, creating a sustainable impact takes time and persistence, but with your dedication and the support of like-minded individuals, you can help make a significant difference in waste management practices in Bengaluru.

Stay committed to your goals and continue inspiring others to join the cause for a cleaner and greener city.
